Functional Sustainability of Water Facilities and Improved Water Facilities in Oyam District the Case Study of Ngai Sub County

Abstract

This study assessed the functional sustainability of water facilities and improved drinking water facilities in Ngai Sub County, Oyam district. With specific objectives to: ascertain the level of operation and maintenance of water facilities; establish the level of community participation to water facilities; and to ascertain the level of access to improved drinking water facilities

The research was a cross sectional studies design, employing descriptive and qualitative research approaches. Both secondary and primary data were employed. Cluster, simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used. Data was analysed & presented using Microsoft excel.

Ooperation & maintenance was highlighted as great challenge to functional sustainability of water facilities with theft, breakdown & vandalism also influencing the functional sustainability of water facilities. Community participation in water facilities also remains a challenge as a result of limited capacity of the water service communities. Some communities do not have access to safe drinking water, most water facilities do not yield enough volume coupled with unequal access to water facilities especially among the rich and the poor, and between the urban and rural.

Government needs to establish and build capacity of the water service committees. Community participation in the whole project cycle should be enhanced. Community should ensure proper usage, operations and maintenance of water facilities. Government needs to fully support the functionality of water facilities in the community; with proper supervision of the operation of water facilities.

Areas for further studies are: Governance and Sustainability of Rural Point water facilities; and Factors influencing Community ownership of water facilities
