Abstract
The study assessed the relationship between persistence child marriage to girl child education in Uganda with special focus to Kaberamaido district, Otuboi Sub County. It was guided by specific objectives which sought to establish the relationship between persistence child marriages to girl child education in Otuboi Sub County Kaberamaido district, the objetives were, to establish the occurences of child marriage in Otuboi Sub County,to ascertain the community‘s attitude towards child marriage verses girl child education and to determine the methods towards elimination of child marriage and promotion of girl child education in Otuboi Sub County.A case study design was employed and qualitative approach was used. The researcher used questionnaires, focus group discussions, interviews, and documentary review to collect data in the field that covered 70 respondents. According to primary data, the district had a population of 253,325 people; of whom 127,092 are male and 126,233 are female. As per this study, the researcher only targeted 70 respondents who basically acted as the representative number of the above population and were carefully selected to provide the required data for the study. These were 15 men (5key stakeholders), 15 women (05 women leaders, 15 girls and 15boys. (Uganda National Population and Housing Census, 2014). I.e. Information gathered was balanced and representative enough to give the researcher the required information about the study topic. The key findings of the research were that poverty was ranked the main contributing factor to child marriage. This is simply because many girls in this area are not able to provide for their basic needs and hence end up being abused by the old and young men who can give them some little money for their upkeep and others do not go to school so they get married early because they think that being married will solve their problems. The schools do not offer sex education and reproductive health, thus young girls who complete standard seven get married and enter marriage without adequate health education. Ignorance on reproductive health was seen to be among the influencing factor to child marriage. The research recommends that Government Development programs at Sub County should intervene to empower youth with employable skills so that the youth can disengage from factors which contribute to child marriage such as commercial sex and peerin fluance.
