Abstract
The study examines the effect of motivation on productivity of the employees at Uganda Martyrs University- Nkozi as a case study.The objectives of the study of the study are: To find out the relationship between rewards and incentives and productivity of the employees, To examine the relationship between employee expectation and productivity of employees and To examine the relationship between empowerment and productivity of employees.The study used a case study design and also adopted quantitative and qualitative approach for the study. The sample size was determined by the Krejcie and Moegan (1970) table which obtained a sample size of 169 respondents and closed ended questionnaires and interview guide were used to collect data. The findings show that incentives and rewards provide lasting reminder of achievements and the efforts put to achieving it. Incentives also influence performance indirectly through creating an environment in which employees can work effectively and also increase the willingness of workers to put effort into their tasks because they do not want to let their teammates down. Additionally, high employee morale which has encouraged teamwork and that good performing employees are rewarded according to their expectations. The workers are satisfied with their job and find it exciting; they can therefore choose to do good work and also that satisfied employees will increase the capability of the organization to achieve its mission, goals and objectives. It was also revealed from the study that empowerment of employees has enhanced job satisfaction. Employee empowerment is also one of the most effective means of allowing employees at every level to utilize their creative thinking. The employees also now have a quicker response to customer requirements as a result of employee empowerment since it also enables them to share knowledge and ideas regarding their work. Finally, the study recommended that the Management, in studying how to address the performance and productivity of employees need to critically address the issue of reward systems as more than just the monthly compensation given to an employee. In building effective reward systems, management need to look at five key factors which are compensation, benefits, work life balance, development and career opportunities, performance and recognition. In light of the discoveries made by this study, while there is reason to analyze the employee motivation of employees, other strategies should not be neglected in enhancing employee satisfaction and commitment which are as important to driving employee productivity. An employee who is satisfied with his job would perform his duties well and be committed to his job, and subsequently to his organization.
