Design and Construction of an Occupational Health and Safety Information System Case Study: Century Bottling Company

Course: Master of Science in Information Systems
Year: 1970
Author: Okwera Robert
Supervisor:

Abstract

This research sought to develop an information system that provides multimedia occupational health and safety messages to workers and minimises the time and cost involved in the management of occupational health and safety activities and the delivery of these messages. The research targeted Hazardous Work Area Workers and Occupational Health and Safety officers at Century Bottling Company Mbarara Plant. Questionnaires, interviews, document review and observations were used as research instruments to collect data.It was found out that OHS related problems negatively affect workers’ productive capacity in the beverages industry resulting in reduced worker output. Workers develop a negative attitude and low morale towards work. High incidents of accidents at work also occur. The system developed seeks to provide a way of efficiently and effectively delivering multimedia occupational health and safety messages which can easily be interpreted. These messages can cater for all categories of people including the deaf, blind and illiterate. The research minimises the time and recursive cost involved in management and delivery of occupation health and safety messages. The research recommends that factories should upgrade their OHS through ensuring that OHS information systemsrecognise people coming into the hazardous work area and gives them the list of hazards in the area and providing the ability to use voice recognition to query the database of the safety information you need
