Abstract
This study aimed at “Examining the contribution of BRAC in promoting the education of girls in Kotido district”, to find out how BRAC’s school fees support increases the enrollment and retention of girls in school, to establish how instructional materials provided by BRAC enhances the performance of girls in schools, and to find out how the provision of food in schools by BRAC increases girls attendance.
The study used a qualitative research and case study design and had a sample of 30 respondents which included; the BRAC beneficiaries (girls), the BRAC staff and the BRAC manager. The major data collection methods that were used included; Focus Group Discussions and the use of interview guide.
The major findings of the study indicate that the majority of the respondents were female (girls and women) both those working at BRAC and the beneficiaries. The age bracket of the respondents that composed the highest percentage of 43.3% was for those between 20-29 years of age. In terms of education level of the respondents, majority of the respondents were at secondary level and this were mainly the girls who were supported by BRAC.
The study recommended that BRAC should increase opportunities on top materials they give to the girls to ensure they are retained in school, a concerted effort should be made by BRAC and other NGOs to break through the rigid cultural beliefs and values that have for long denied the girl child education. To ensure retention of girls in school, BRAC should liaise with other stakeholders to curb the cases of teachers eyeing the girl child as their prey.
