Savings and Credit Cooperative Services and Poverty Reduction in Rural Areas of Uganda Case Study: Lyamujjungu Sacco in Kabale District

Abstract

This study assessed the role savings and credit cooperative services and poverty reduction in rural areas of Uganda: The specific objectives of the study were: To examine the causes of poverty in rural areas, to establish the role of savings and loans on poverty reduction in rural areas and to identify challenges faced by SACCOS in an attempt to reduce poverty. The study adopted the case study design with quantitative and qualitative research techniques. A total sample size of 103 respondents from Lyamujjungu SACCO in Kabale district was used. Selfadministered questionnaires and were used to collect data. Data was coded and later processed and analyzed. From the study it was revealed that the SACCO offers convenient savings service, has helped to change savings culture and that savings are an important pool in poverty reduction, it was also revealed that Members save willingly, in order to multiply wealth and that the members are sure about the safety of their savings. The loans process is be easy so that the clients are encouraged to acquire. Poverty exists everywhere and is just the lack of income, but also means to satisfy basic social needs, as well as a feeling of powerlessness to break out of the cycle of poverty, insecurity of person and property. It was also learnt that the main causes of poverty are the lack of access to credit, Low income, Low savings, Lack of entrepreneurial skills and Lack of land. It is recommended that SAACCOs should reduce on the interest rates to encourage more people to get loans. It is recommended that the SAACOs should develop good proper and effective credit management strategies that are needed to enhance the quality of institutional support for the clients.
