Effect of Management Styles on Employee Performanace in Commercial Banks a Case Study of Centenary Bank, Uganda

Abstract

The study sought to investigate the effect of management styles on employee performance in Centenary Bank. The purpose of this study was concerned with analysing the effect of authoritarian management style, laissez-faire management style and participative management style on their ability to influence work and productivity in Centenary Bank in a manner that creates efficiency and effectiveness. The objectives that guided the study were; to examine the effect of authoritarian management style on employee performance, to examine the effect of laissez-faire management style on employee performance and to examine the effect of participative management style on employee performance in Centenary Bank. The study followed a survey research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the parent population was one hundred and fifty respondents and the sampling techniques were involved in considering their appropriateness and relative strengths and weaknesses. The data collected was sorted and analysed based on codes and statistical packages of frequencies, percentages calculated in the descriptive statistics. The findings of the study were; authoritative management style was practiced especially in higher offices, the laissez-faire management style was highly existent especially in lower offices and participative management style was practiced by few employees since its considered to be the most difficult style to understand. Conclusions were that: there was high confusion in the practice of authoritarian management style since most managers were arrogant yet employees were practicing laissez-faire management style. Recommendations of the study were; that empowerment was needed through training, developing teams and according some measure of power and authority to these teams and also that Centenary Bank would reduce the dominance of authoritarian and laissez-faire management style by providing a system that Provide professionalism and transparency.
