The Role of Planning on Organisational Performance. Case Study: Kampala Capital City Authority’s Planning Department and Nakawa Division

Abstract

This research was done on the topic “The Role of Planning on Organisational Performance”, Using KCCA’s Planning Department as a case study, as well as Nakawa Division and the objectives of the study were;To examine the relationship between the process of strategic planning onorganisational performance, to examine whether the process of tactical planning is related to organisational performance and to establish the relationship between the process of functional planning to organisational performance. Data was collected from the case study areas by using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, it was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS), frequencies and later presented with use of figures, tables and percentages.

Under the findings, it was discoveredthat the processes of strategic planning, tactical planning and functional planningare key in overcoming the problems encountered at the implementation stage, enhancing key decisions, leading toachievement of objectives, and that these processes also provided direction to the employees.Planning process increase organizational performance as an overall conclusion.

Based on this study, the researcher made the following recommendations; that organisations should hire expertise to conduct the planning processes,stake holders and top managers should hold employee train sessions to equip them with the knowledge of how to practice tactical planning, strategic planning and functional planning in order to improve the organisation performance. The researcher then suggested areas for further study as the following; the relationship between strategic planning and employee motivation, the effect of tactical planning on productivity of an organisation, the contribution of functional planning towards the achievement of an organisational goals and objectives.
