Abstract
This study was carried out to find out the effect of motivation on the performance of rural primary school teachers. It was carried out in Nkozi sub-county found in Mpigi district Mawokota south constituency. The study population was the teachers of Nkozi Demonstration Primary School. The reasons for this research were that the school has suffered from numerous human resource problems including staff turnover, absenteeism and general reduced morale amongst the teaching staff. The specific objectives were: to assess the effect of monetary rewards on the performance of primary school teachers; to examine the effect of staff recognition on the performance of Primary school teachers; to establish the effect of opportunities for advancement on the n the performance.
Literature was reviewed to supplement and support the research findings and mainly articles, academic journals, text books and internet were used as major sources of literature. This literature greatly contributed to the study and findings of the study were compared with the literature to see whether they concur or not.
Questionnaires were used as means of data collection and 20 questionnaires were distributed to the primary teachers. The data collected was then analyzed properly to produce information. The findings of the study indicated that teachers in Nkozi Demonstration Primary School were positively and negatively affected by. The positive effect included: improved employee performance, increased job satisfaction, increased productivity, increased morale for work, increased attendance and increased customer care where as the positive effect included: decline in performance, job dissatisfaction, and decreased morale for work, boring work, late coming and absenteeism.
The study findings facilitated the recommendations that the research put to the management of Nkozi demonstration school. They included: training workers, increasing workers salaries, caring about workers issues, availing good working conditions and promoting them where necessary. It finally ends with suggestions to future researchers and what they should focus on when carrying out research in the same field and area of study.
