The Contribution of Microfinance Institutions to the Development of Women Groups in Uganda a Case Study of Wekembe Women’s Group

Abstract
The major objective of this study was to examine the relationship between Microfinance institutions and the development of women groups. The specific objectives are; to examine the role of savings on the development of women groups, to assess the contribution of loans on the development of women groups and to discuss how trainings affect the development of women groups.
A case study design was used to conduct the study with a sample size of 144 respondents. Various data collection instruments were used in this study and these include; questionnaires and interview guide.
The findings revealed that there is statistically significant correlation existing between savings and development of women groups with a positive relationship (r = .827, p <.042), there is statistically significant correlation existing between loans and development of women groups with a positive relationship (r = .847, p <.033) and there is statistically significant correlation existing between training and development of women groups with a positive relationship (r = .738, p <.015).
From the study it can be said that micro finance institutions strongly affect the development of women groups.
The researcher therefore recommends that management should ensure that training activities towards savings and loans are always maintained and promoted in order to increase development thus enhancing the development of women groups within the country.
