Abstract
The study looks at Teacher’s working conditions and students’ academic performance in Wakiso district. The objectives of the study are; to determine the effect of teachers’ working hours on the students’ academic performance in Wakiso district, to analyze the effect of teacher’s pay on the students’ academic performance in Wakiso district and to find out the effect of job security on the students’ academic performance in Wakiso district.
The study was based on a case deign which was both qualitative and quantitative. Data collection instruments used included; interview guide and questionnaires for both the teachers and the students. The researcher employed a total population of 60 respondents whose sample size was 52 respondents as determined by the use of R.V. Krejcie and D. W. Morgan (1970) table.
The findings form the field showed that the teacher’s working hours affect the students’ academic performance because when the teachers do teach the students according to the school time table, then the students can be able to excel in their examinations. Teachers teaching during their normal working hours and even those teachers that work beyond their normal working hours of work give the students an opportunity to complete the syllabus in time so that they can have time to do revision. The teacher’s pay affects on students’ academic performance because whenever the teachers are not given remuneration for their work, then they cannot produce quality work in terms of delivering knowledge to the students and in the end, this can affect the performance of the students. The teacher’s job security affects students’ academic performance simply because whenever the teacher feels that he/she is going to fired at the school, then this teacher will not deliver as expected most especially in teaching and this will affect students’ academic performance. The findings from the interview guides showed that students’ indiscipline behavior is also a contributing factor to poor academic performance of the students.
In conclusion, the study recommended that teachers should always give their students enough time for relaxation most especially after the normal classes in order for the students to engage in other social activities such as games and sports. The government and the private owners of the schools should ensure that they pay the teacher’s salaries in time and also provide job security to the teachers in order to encourage other people in the teaching profession and those already there.
