The Relationship Between Remuneration and Commitment of Primary School Teachers in Mbale Municipality Case Study: Grace Primary School

Abstract

The study was on: The Relationship of Remuneration and Commitment of Primary Teachers” focusing at Grace Primary School. The specific objectives of the study were: To establish the effect of monetary rewards on commitment of primary teachers, to examine the effects of non-monetary rewards on commitment and to establish the effect of commitment on organizational performance.

The study adopted a case study design were qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The sample size comprised of 36 respondents selected from the study population of 40 respondents. Simple random and purposive sampling was used in selecting of the respondents for the study. Both primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data was collated using questionnaires, discussions and secondary data was collected from text books, magazines, newspapers and internet.

The study findings were as follows: On the effects of monetary rewards on commitment the average mean of (3.28) was got which was effective implying that monetary rewards lead to commitment of primary teachers. The average on the effects of non-monetary rewards on commitment was (2.92) which was effective implying that non-monetary rewards also enhance employee commitment and on the effects of commitment on organizational performance the average mean was found to be (3.52) which was very effective implying that commitment of employees leads to better performance of organizations.

Basing on the findings of the study the following recommendations were made: The government private schools should grant more scholarships and study leave with pay to teachers to improve their professional and leadership competencies, the condition of Service of teachers should be improved with increase in salaries, provision of free accommodation, scholarship for wards teachers, subsidy for electricity, and free medical care for teachers and their families, Pension packages of teachers should be improved in terms of the lump sum and monthly allowance, the government and society in general should recognize the effort of teachers and reward them appropriately, communities and traditional areas should also institute award schemes in their own small ways to complement the government award Scheme, timely promotion of teachers and subsidized access to the internet should be seriously considered, the managements should undertake frequent comparison and adjustment of its strategies at motivating teachers with other organizations, related to the above, schools should conduct attitude survey on workers to seek information on what teachers like and dislike about their work. Feedback should be given immediate attention by management and should constitute the basis for management strategies to motivate and retain staff, the government on its part should recognize the pivotal role teachers play in education and motivate and resource them to play their role effectively.
