Abstract
This study sought to find out the “Relationship between the education system and the economic development in Uganda” in the Central region. The objectives of this study is to determine effect of the education system of Uganda on the economic development of this economy, to find out the relationship between context and economic development and determine whether number of students and teachers affect economic development. This is a secondary data study, with information from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics but with specific reference to the central region, where 10 districts were chosen for a sample size out of 22 districts in this region.
It established that the variables of the education system were teachers, context, students and content while those of economic development were standard of living, literacy rates and employment rates. In addition, I looked at the effects of content, context, students and teachers on the economic development in terms of literacy rates, employment rates and standard of living respectively. This study is a quantitative study as it is basing on secondary data. In my analysis, I used the SPSS statistical software for the correlation of the relationship between the education system variables and the economic development variables, as well as Microsoft excel for the descriptive statistics. With regard to the descriptive statistics and the correlation, the student teacher ratio will measure the number of teachers, the total or gross enrolment will measure the number of students, net enrolment will measure the content, and classroom ratio will measure the context.
The relationship between the variables was analysed that shows the correlation between them and the significance of the relationship between variables. If the significance is positive, then there is a significant relationship. If it is negative, then there is no significant relationship between the variables. There is a positive relationship between teachers, context, students, classrooms and dependency ratios (employment) with standard of living but no significant relation with the literacy levels. The recommendations from carrying out this study would be to encourage that the number of teachers to be increased by sponsoring them in teacher colleges, classrooms be increased by building more classes or even schools and that the curriculum be revisited annually for better evaluation of the subjects and programmes that are relevant.
Key words: Relationship between, Education System, Economic development.
