Abstract
The study was about “The Factors Affecting Girl Child Primary Education in Bududa District: A case study of Bududa Sub County”. The study objectives included; to show that girl child primary education is low, the factors affecting girl child primary education and the possible strategies to improve girl child primary education in Bududa Sub County, Bududa District. The study sampled 92 respondents out of a study population of 120 respondents. These included head teachers, teachers, pupils, parents and local leaders.
The study employed three research instruments which included use of questionnaires, interview guide and documentary review. According to the findings, it was found out that there is consistent absenteeism of pupils, irregular attendance in class for unclear reasons from pupils, low enrolment levels and retention among pupils in class. It was further found out that distance to and from school, Inability to fully provide the necessary scholastic materials, Poverty, Cultural Beliefs, Early marriages, and Menstrual challenges / inability to afford sanitary pads are among the factors affecting girl child primary education in Bududa Sub County, Bududa District. Study findings indicated that the strategies to improve girl child primary education in Bududa Sub County, Bududa District are as follows; parental responsiveness to girl child education, free universal primary education, improve the schools environment, awareness creation on gender equality, children’s rights and implementation of schools regulations and policies. In conclusion therefore, girl child education in Bududa District needs serious intervention from all stokeholds concerned to improve the attainment of education putting much emphasis on the girl child.
It is therefore recommended that the ministry of education and sports needs to endeavor carrying out routine inspection of UPE schools to monitor the attendance of teachers and pupils and further take action against UPE schools with irregularities in performance and execution of the activities in teaching and learning process. It is also recommended that teachers need to proactively get involved in fighting early school dropout through developing means of increasing the integration of pupils in extra-curricular activities and communication with their parents to engage them in monitoring and observing their children’s education.
