Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of poor academic performance of pupils in Yambio County. To identify these factors, three research objectives were used to investigate the poor academic performance of pupils in Yambio County. These include; to find out the extent to which home related factors affect the academic performance of pupils in primary School in Yambio County; To find out the school environmental related factors affecting the academic performance of pupils in Primary Schools in Yambio County; to find out the pupils characteristics or attitude related factors affecting the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Yambio County. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used in this research. The study established factors that are particular to Nabema and Nakpangawo primary schools. These factors attributed to parents, school environmental, and the pupils were primarily responsible for the poor academic performance of the pupils. Home related factors variables causing pupils to perform poorly academically was; their inability to provide textbooks and supplementary readers, low level of interaction with children’s teachers, and low involvement in the Parent Teacher Association. The school environmental factors included limited number of teachers with high academic qualification, inadequate teaching and learning materials, incidences of lateness to school and absenteeism, inability to complete the syllabi and inadequate homework assignments to pupils. The pupil characteristics or attitudes included incidences of lateness to school and absenteeism, and use of local language in the classroom. However, in conclusion, the study has practical significance as it has shaded lights on the factors affecting the academic performance of pupils in Nabema and Nakpangawo primary schools and for influencing decision making to improve pupils’ academic performance in the Yambio County. It was recommended among others that there is the need to improve parent’s attitudes, intensify supervision of teachers, institute incentive packages to teachers, sensitize and motivate the pupils through recognizing individual differences in education and encouraging guidance and counseling Services for pupils.
