The Effects of Mordernisation of Agriculture on Household Income in Sironko District: a Case Study of Zesui Sub-County

Abstract
The study was carried out to establish the effects of mechanization of agriculture on household income in Zesiu Sub county. Specifically, the study sought to examine the kind of services and inputs given to farmers at household level, to find out the agricultural technology used, to show that modernization of agriculture in Zesui Sub-County is far from the desirable and to explore other strategies of modernization of agriculture in Zesui Sub-County.
The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection with a case study research design to obtain the sample size of 52 respondents. This involves the use of interview guide and Questionnaire used in collecting data.
The study findings revealed that the new implementation strategies have provided new products and services besides the previous. Some respondents revealed that the army is not technical enough to handle agriculture since they are trained in different fields hence, their services are not in line with agriculture like the type of crops which can produce well in a specified locality. It was revealed that rudimentary tools were still being used by most farmers which partly contributed to low productivity. Farmers’ participation in PMA activities had not improved their agricultural technologies. In addition to that, farmers were still faced with the challenge of pests and diseases as revealed by the majority of the respondents.
The study concluded that modernization of agriculture in the sub-county is practiced on small scale, use of poor methods of farming traditional tools, failure to access markets and lack of knowledge about the information, inadequate land. However the following strategies have been made by the government and farmers to address the changes they include; improved infrastructure like roads, sensitization people about the proper methods of farming, use of pesticides and insecticides and good land tenure system among others.
The study recommended that local farmers should grow corps that can be exported to European markets as finished products, local leaders should emphasizes on guiding the population on good methods of farming, how to conserve soils. It further recommends provision of support to substance farmers, policy planners in the sub-county should relink the development strategies and invest heavily in agriculture.
