Abstract
The study was entirely about the socio-cultural factors affecting the participation of women in rural Development projects; a case of NUSAF 2 in Adjumani district. The purpose of the study was to establish the socio-cultural factors affecting the participation of women in rural development projects.
The objectives that guided the study included; to determine the activities implemented under NUSAF 2 in rural development projects, to ascertain socio-cultural factors affecting women’s participation under NUSAF 2 in rural development projects and to find out possible solutions to factors hindering women from participating in NUSAF 2 rural development projects
The study followed a case study design with a mixed approach in gathering data for the purpose of documenting this study included a descriptive research design, use of sampling techniques and procedures, interviews and self-administered questionnaires data collection methods, data collection instruments, data analysis and ethical considerations. This design was used because data was obtained from the research tools, that is, questionnaire and interview guides.
From the research study conducted it was found out that; the activities implemented under NUSAF 2 in rural development projects are extensive and cover but not limited to: election of group leaders, attending group meetings and trainings, identification of investment projects, procurement of goods and services, Monitoring and Evaluation of the activities that the groups are engaged in, among others; the socio-cultural factors affecting women’s participation under NUSAF 2 rural development projects included: lack of external support and willingness by women themselves to act upon available resources, Religion, culture and gender related factors, among others; the solutions included: project and gender planning, and Structural Adjustment Policy (SAP) among others.
From the findings, the research concluded that; the implemented activities are resourceful towards the diversification and development of the entire area of Adjumani District.; the socio-cultural factors affecting women’s participation under NUSAF 2 in rural development projects are countless in nature, the solutions are realistic and adaptable if properly planned. From the conclusion the research recommended; Monitoring and evaluation of the projects, Funding of the project, Community involvement and women empowerment, among others.
