The Impact of Small Hold Businesses on the Socio-Economic Welfare of Women in Mbale Municipality. a Case Study of Mbale Central Market

Abstract

The study was about the impact of small hold business on the socio-economic welfare of women in Mbale Central Market, Mbale Municipality. The research objectives included; the Socio Economic Status of women in Mbale Central Market, the impact of small hold business on the livelihoods of women in Mbale Central Market and the challenges facing women undertaking small hold businesses as a means to livelihood in Mbale Central Market.

The study considered a cross-sectional research design where both the qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. A study sample of 80 respondents was considered out of a population of 100 respondents. Key informants in the study were; women, local leaders and Mbale Central Market Leaders. The study used three research instruments which included; questionnaires, interview guide and documentary review. Findings on the Socio Economic Status of women indicated that, women in Mbale central market engage in farming activities which have helped to improve proper nutrition, have access to health services hence good family health. They also have access to safe water, saving schemes hence have helped in the multiplication of their savings and access to better shelter. Regarding the impact of small hold business. It was revealed that small hold business have majorly improved the incomes of women, increased the saving culture of women, Promoted good standards of livings and increased access to basic needs such as shelter, clothing and education. Challenges women face operating small hold business in Mbale Central Market include unstable market, poor road net work, lack of access to capital and poverty.

It is therefore concluded that small hold businesses have contributed to the social economic wellbeing of women in Mbale Central Market. It is recommended that government should consider extending livelihood programs to the women in Mbale central market inform of financial support to encourage and support women involved in small hold business.
