The Impact of Peace, Recovery and Development Plan (Prdp) Interventions on Household Livelihoods in Gweri Sub- County, Soroti

Abstract

The study topic was the impact of peace, recovery and development plan (PRDP) interventions on household livelihoods Gweri sub-County. The study had three specific objectives notably: to present situation of household livelihoods in Gweri Sub-county before PRDP; to present the services of PRDP and their impact on household livelihoods; and to establish the challenges PRDP faces in its endeavour to improve household livelihoods

The study used a cross sectional research design and both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 40 households and analyzed.

Finding of this study revealed that 72.5% of respondents agreed that Teso sub-region suffers from floods before PRDP; 77.5% agreed that Teso region suffer famine. The study also found that PRDP offered several services to the community among others were improvement of health services; improvement of education through rehabilitation of existing schools; lowering the national poverty rate in the region and improvement of water and sanitation in the area. The study also established that PRDP led to land conflict where foreign investors tried to acquire land; there was loss of land for development during PRDP service provision; few people benefited from PRDP; Some of the PRDP services favoured other people at the expense of the disadvantaged.

The study also established that, 65% of respondents strongly agreed that alcoholism was one of the challenges faced by PRDP; 22.5% agreed; 57.5% strongly agreed that insecurity was one of the challenges faced by PRDP, 25% agreed, while 30% of respondents strongly agreed that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is one of the challenges faced by PRDP and 60% agreed.

The study concluded that Soroti is prone to a variety of hazards including floods, crop and animal epidemics, severe storms, land conflict, environmental degradation, pest infestation, drought and food insecurity. However, PRDP offered several services; improvement of health services; improvement of education through rehabilitation of existing schools; lowering the national poverty rate in the region and improvement of water and sanitation in the area. Numerous challenges were faced during PRDP such as land conflicts, cattle raiding, food insecurity, poverty.

The study recommends that: the PRDP must channel increased resources into the aspects of peace building and recovery; Sensitization of the community on agriculture to improve on the crop production finally the local government needs to address the
