Factors Affecting Students’ Academic Achievements: a Case Study of Uganda Martyrs University

Abstract

The study investigated the factors affecting student’s academic achievements in Uganda Martyrs University with emphasis on trying to determine the relationship between performance evaluation, student’s health status and student’s financial status and study environment, and students’ academic achievements in Uganda Martyrs University.

A sample size of 50 respondents which comprised of students from the faculties of; Business Administration and Management, Science, built environment, agriculture and institute of ethics and development studies was determined using a simple random sampling technique. The study employed the use of questionnaires for collecting data and the use of correlation design to establish the nature of the relationships. As s basis for detailed data analysis, conclusion and recommendation thePearson product moment correlation statistical too was used for determining the relationship between performance evaluation, student’s health status and financial status and the study environment with students’ academic achievements in Uganda Martyrs University.

The findings revealed the existence of a significant positive relationship between the study environment and students’ academic achievements as revealed by the Pearson Product Moment Correlation which gave the correlation coefficient (r= 0.713) and the p-value (=0.034) which was less than the predetermined alpha = 0.05 in table 4.19. It was also determined that there was an insignificant relationship between the performance evaluation and students academic achievements as given by the p-value of 0.905 which greater than alpha (0.05). The relationship between students’ financial status and student’s academic achievements was also determined to be very small as was indicated by a very low positive correlation of 0.077. The study also revealed that the negative relationship between student’s health status and students’ academic achievements as was also indicated by a negative correlation coefficient of – 0.121. This revealed the existence of an insignificant relationship between student’s health status and academic achievements.

The researcher recommended that Uganda Martyrs University should maintain practice of evaluating teaching and learning to ensure effectiveness and provision of better services putting inconsideration the fact that they explain to students the results of the evaluation and in case changes needed by students are not made, this helps them to feel respected,

UMU should seek to maintain the good condition of its study environment since it was revealed as a good determinant of academic achievement.
