The Contribution of Microfinance Institutions on Women Economic Empowerment Case Study: Women Clients of Uganda Finance Trust in Masaka Municipality

Abstract
This study presents an assessment on the contribution of the Microfinance Institutions to Women Economic Empowerment with a case study of women clients of Uganda Finance Trust in Masaka Municipality. The study objectives were to examine how savings influence women economic empowerment, to examine the effect of credit on women economic empowerment, to examine the effect of financial training on women economic empowerment. The study was conducted from women clients of Uganda Finance Trust in Masaka Municipality using a representative sample size of 60 respondents. The data was collected using different tools such as self-administered questionnaires and interviews.
The findings from the study reveal that savings, credit and financial training affect the economic empowerment of the women in Masaka Municipality. Implying that the more the women save, acquire credit and financial training, the more the positive changes in their economic lives hence economic empowerment.
The study recommended that the government should promote MFI activities and Uganda Finance Trust should encourage more women to save, offer more loans to both members and non-members in order to promote the standards of living of citizens and improve on their economic activities, the interest rate charged on loans should be kept low to enable women borrow so as to improve on their economic empowerment, more financial literacy as a way of attracting more people to MFIs and also to ensure that borrowed funds by client are used effectively.
