Bio

Bernard Lutalo is a lecturer and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Education at Uganda Martyrs University. He is currently pursuing his doctoral studies in Geography, with a research focus rooted in the Man–Land tradition of geography, which explores the dynamic relationships between human societies and their physical environments. As a geographer, Bernard is passionate about land degradation, wetland sustainability, and the complexities of sand mining. His academic interests extend to sand market analysis and sustainability dynamics, where he investigates the economic drivers, regulatory frameworks, and environmental consequences of sand extraction across Uganda and the broader African context. As an educator, Bernard is actively involved in implementing Competence-Based Education (CBE) at Uganda Martyrs University and beyond, a transformative approach that emphasizes practical skills, critical thinking, and learner autonomy. He integrates CBE principles into his geography courses, fostering active learning and preparing students to address real-world environmental challenges with confidence and creativity. Through his teaching, research, and academic leadership, Bernard continues to mentor future educators and geographers, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship, resource governance, and sustainable development across diverse ecological contexts.
